The Pub With No Beer Ride will be held on 12th January 2002 at Booroorban, a small town 46 Kms South of Hay and 75 Kms North of Deniliquin on the Cobb Highway.

Now why on earth would anyone be actually advertising a ride located next  to the grounds of a pub with no bloody beer?  Well this one has nothing to do with Slim Dusty's song of the same name (although I thought the midi file was appropriate).  What we are attempting to do is to raise public awareness of the plight of a small hard-working closely knit rural community caused by the sale of the hotel and loss of the liquor licence.  The community wants their grog back!!

The Ride Committee (and the owners) will, however, be obtaining a temporary liquor license and there will also be a canteen so you can buy a bite to eat or a drink or whatever.  So please come and give your support.

I was just informed that the Royal Mail Hotel at Booroorban (where the ride is being held) has just been granted their permanent liquor licence. I reckon that our ride has (hopefully) helped them in their quest. Looks like we might have to change the name .... perhaps to The Pub With Plenty Of Beer Ride!!!

That said, the ride base is like an oasis in the middle of  a desert - there are toilet and shower blocks and even  a few limited powered sites. Contact Mandy at the pub on telephone number (02) 6993-0694 to book your powered site.  Just look up Royal Mail Hotel, Booroorban via Telstra's information if that fails!     The track at Booroorban is good underfoot and well suited to Novice horses.  There are NO hills (well - perhaps the odd ant hill!) and it  mostly goes through private properties. There is however, what I call Mount Booroorban, a massive escarpment of at least 20 metres height, with a gradient of about 3 percent!

This course is such that you can sludge around as I do and just get a completion (or to start out a new mount or bring an old hand back into work) or do fast times if you choose to be competitive.  If you're considering selling your mount to one of those mobs from one of those desert countries, what better event to "prove" your horse can hack it than a desert ride? There are no sand dunes though, just good, soft footing so that the dreaded "concussion" should not be a factor to concern you.  There are a few stones, but nothing worthwhile mentioning, so your trusty steed should not become footsore.

There will be plenty of water on track.  Some will be in the form of ground tanks (dams), some from irrigation channels and yet more will be from water drops, with the local bushfire brigades supplying tankers and the like for your assistance.

It has been said that flat land rides can be (and some are) monotonous, but we have gone to a great deal of effort to ensure that neither you nor your horse will get bored!

Facilities at the pub include a cosy area in which to meet where the pre ride talk and presentations will be held.  It also has a "Corner store" type shop  which stocks all the usual basics like soft drinks, lollies and batteries  etc.

In addition to all those goodies, we also have :-

Out on course, there will be radio communications at all checkpoints which will also provide refreshments for you (yum!) such as rock melons (kept chilled) and carrots for your steed and other "tucker".  The locals, I am sure, will go out of their way to make your ride as pleasurable as possible. You might even score yourself a tinny, although I have to tell you that I would pass up on one of those whilst competing!  I have a hard enough job staying mounted when stone cold sober!

There will be a  PA system to transmit messages across the whole of the ride base. Who knows - when things get quiet we may even be treated to some entertainment via this means!

Failing that, right next door to the ride base over the same week-end, the Booroorban Country Fair will be held, so there will be plenty to keep strappers, friends and family members occupied back at camp. If you have some arts or crafts that you wish to flog off, I am told that you can book a table/stall at a very reasonable fee. Again, contact Mandy for details on (02) 6993-0694.

As you can see, we are trying to provide you with everything we can to enhance your endurance riding experience at The Pub With No Beer Ride & Drive.

So come along, support this tiny struggling rural community, and one of the best "bush rides" around and enjoy the magnificent outback hospitality.  No one can duplicate the friendliness of bushies, so I am sure that you will have a ball.

Please ring or email Steph ASAP (contact details supplied below) to give us an indication as to the numbers we can expect for catering purposes.  It will also help you when it comes time to present yourself for booking in as this will allow us to have most of your details already logged into our computer, thus speeding up the nomination process.  This will save you a heap of time and would help us out a tremendous amount.  Unfortunately, through no fault of our own, we had to hold off on pre nominations too late to have them included in the newsletters, so we cannot offer a reduced fee for nominating early this year, but contacting Steph in the weeks leading up to the event will make nominating as painless and swift as can be expected at any ride.  Remember, we are a tiny community, so "helpers" are limited, so help us to assist you to log in promptly.

Helpers are always useful (as at all rides), so if you can aid us as a TPR, a general dogsbody or in any capacity your assistance would be greatly appreciated.  If you can help, please contact Steph via the means supplied, below.

It is bush rides like this that are the lifeblood of our sport and we need your support to ensure yet another terrific bush ride can remain on the calendar.

The contact for further details is Stephanie Dickie on (02) 6993 1175. or email at arab@tpg.com.au
